During the past decade, the explosive growth in the internet world has transformed the lives of millions of individual at home and at work. This has dramatically altered the business landscape and entertaining ourselves in ways that were unimaginable just 10 or even 5 years ago.
Market demand for higher bandwidth is putting pressure on existing copper terrestrial network. Based on current technology, there is limitation to increase the bandwidth of copper network to beyond 100 Mega bits per second in supporting more exotic features or applications. This has opened the door to adopt latest optical fibre technology to keep pace with the demands.
OpenNet is privileged to be appointed by iDA in implementing the world’s first nationwide all-fibre platform which is the key foundation of Singapore’s Next Generation Nationwide Broadband Network (Next Gen NBN). OpenNet will ensure open access of this platform in offering our services to all Qualified Persons, in short our customers, so as to allow level playing field in Singapore.
This passive platform will be the enabler of ultra-high speeds, up to 1 Giga bits per second and above per end user. It will represent a new “utility” outlet in the homes and offices to deliver ultra-high bandwidth, allowing downstream operators to deliver triple play services of voice, data and video.
With the all-fibre passive platform in place as the enabler for Singapore’s NGNBN to fulfill Singapore’s vision of the intelligent Nation 2015, OpenNet provides new possibilities for other downstream operators like operating companies, content or retail service providers to deliver rich content, exotic applications, wider range of choices for the nation.
OpenNet has commenced rolling out the fibre in April 2009 and target to complete the rollout by middle of 2012. It is exciting time now for all of us here at OpenNet, as we play a part in changing the way we live, learn, work and entertain.
